First Portrayal

It was my first trip to Madhya Pradesh(MP) in last year. My job at ASER Center translated into field visits to different states of India. I have not visited MP before. As a child growing up in Assam, I had just done the round of North Eastern states , West Bengal, Odisha, Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Andhrapradesh, Jharkhand and Delhi at different times for different purposes.
I was taken aback by the backwardness of MP on most of the development parameters. And yet, there was population explosion in the state. For example a household has more than four children of same parents and the overcrowded public transports. Basically I visited two districts of MP, Balaghat and Dindori. In Balaghat, on one of my field visit I had to go to Lodama a village often visited by Naxalites and situated on the border of Chatishgarh. That was horrible! Can you believe that an eight seater jeep converted to 25 seaters. No it was not my first experience of that kind, this situation is very similar Bogibill ferry Ghat of Dibrugarh of Assam. Same Pan spitting passengers on your every sides. You just have to hold your grip to ensure you longevity.
Balaghat was a very dry district where I based for 15 days. You can't imagine the hardship of the villagers to get drinking water. But you have to admire their endurance power and their laboriousness. They were harvesting one crop and preparing the land for other crop. Temperature was more than 40 degree in those days. When I came back fom Lodam i was coated with a thick layer of Ivory dust from head to toe. I went to Kanha tiger sanctuary, but did not saw any tiger their.
After spending 15 days in Balaghat,I went to Dindory a hill station very near to Amarkantak, the origin of Narmada river. Comparatively Dindory was cool. Here I got a Scooty Zing from Yugeshwar. He was also working with Pratham. Those were the days of my freedom. I use to ride between the small rocks, during the field visit.
I notice few things, like despite much touted Pradhanmantri Gram Sadak Yujna, roads connecting villages were non existent. Electricity situation was very poor, frequent and long power cut are part of life.
Peoples were politically quite conscious. Not only were they critical of the government, they knew the positive and negative of past and incumbent regimes.
Spending all together 24 days in MP and from the past experiences of rural villages, not for the first time, made me a question, as a nation are we developed? What are the indicators of development? What will we change by working in an NGO related to education, health etc? Are we going to extinct like dinosaurs?
Given the problem of every problems of the country only government can make a significance. But as a member of the civil society we can take the responsibility of our do and don't. It will help us to make our country more livable.

Ahoms of Assam

It is a humble attempt to discuss about the largest community of Assam. It is not a specialist approach, rather it is a layman's approach. This article dose not cover all aspects of the community. I have gathered some of information from elderly persons of the community and also from some books and articles.
The Ahom
Ahoms ruled Assam for six hundred years. Tai Ahom prince Sukaphaa was the first king who occupied the Ahom throne in "Mun Dun Sun Kham' a place of golden paddy. Sukaphaa and his ac-companions came to the land in 1228 and ruled till 1826. Tai Ahoms are one of the tai ethnic groups. In 1228 Sukafaa a Shaan (Mong Mao) prince came to Brahmaputr valley with 9000 followers(Wikipedia) crossing Patkai rang of mountain. He established his kingdom at Cheraidoi(Charaideo) in Sivsagar district in the year of 1253. Ahoms are known as 'Indrabanshiya' they are the successor of 'Lengdon'.
Festivals and Rituals
Funeral: Originally Ahom does not burn the dead bodies, they kept the body in box. It is called "Maidam". Later on Swargadeu Rajeshwar Singha influenced by Hinduism and gave the direction that the dead bodies should be cremated according to Hindu rituals.
Worship of Ancestors: Ahom worship their ancestors in many occasions. In "Mei Dam Mei Phi' they worshiped the Dam Chaos. It is believed that after death human spirits does not die but become Dam(holly spirit). In 'Mei dam mei phi' Chao Phi (The Supreme Gods) and Dam Chaos are worshiped, they are 1. Khao Kham 2.Ai Lengdin 3.Ja Ching Pha 4. Jan Chai Hung 5.Leng Don 6.Chit Lam Cham 6.Mut Kum Tai Kum 7.Caho Phi Dam 8. Ra Khim 9. Ba Khim. There are another four types of ancestors worship called: Ghai Dam (Main Dead Spirit), Chi Dam (Four Dead Spirit), Jokorua Dam (Collective Dead Spirit) and Na Dam (New Dead Spirit).
Bihu: Tai Ahoms of assam mainly celebrate three bihus. Bihus are basically agriculture related festival, as ahom people's main occupation was cultivation there fore they celebrate these three Bihus namely 1/ Bohag Bihu or Rongali Bihu 2/ Kati Bihu or Kangali Bihu 3/Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu. The word Bihu comes from the Tai word 'Pi-hu' or 'Poi-Hu'.

Bohag or Rongali Festival is the main which is observed at the beginning of Spring Season and just before Paddy Cultivation. So Some ritual activities are done by the Ahoms. The First day of this Bihu is called ‘Uruka’ or ‘Goru Bihu’.Tai Ahoms are agriculturist, so Goru Bihu (Cow-Festival) is an auspicious festival. People wash the cows and bullocks at the Open Field or at River. Before this smear or mix pulses (Mati-Mah) Flour, Turmeric Flour with Mustard oil and massage whole body with mixture of three medicinal goods. Every Family brings new rope made from one medicinal tree’s bark named ‘Tora Gosh’. Before tying cow’s and bullock’s neck by rope-a mixture prepared as sacred and medicinal by using Tulsi Leaf (Sacred Tree) and mixture of pulses( Mati-Mah),Turmeric flour with mustard oil. At the evening before giving new ‘pogha’( rope) earth lamps put on in front of cow shed to drive away poisonous insects and ants. Mainly used medicinal plants are Bhang, Kaniya Kothal (Thorny plant) and Makhiyoti trees’ branch to kill mosquito and insects.

Ancestor worship is an auspicious culture of Ahoms. At Bihu Festival they offer home made wine ‘Hanj’ and other food items to their ancestors very respectfully. At the day before first Bohag or New Year’s Day Ahoms’ are habituated to take one hundred and one different varieties of medicinal plant and vegetable at supper. A special food items is also prepared on this Amlori Porua’s cocoon (one kind of insect that takes shelter by making nest on branch of trees) is fried with duck egg.

I wold like to thank Mr. J.N Phukan, Mr.Pronab Gogoi, Sukafa Foundation, Wikipedia, for helping me to write this article.

India Inflation Rate
In September 2011 India's inflation rate is 10.1 percentage. From 1969 to 2010 average inflation rate is 7.99 percent. Highest was September 1974, 34.68 percentage. Lowest in 1976 in May -11.31.

India Unemployment Rate
The unemployment rate in India last reported was 9.4 percent in 2009/10 fiscal year. From 1983 until 2000 India's average unemployment rate was 7.20.

The Endless Wait (Antaheen)

ANTAHEEN, a Bengali movie, dubbed in English as "The Endless Wait", speaks about our eternal loneliness. It explores emptiness, which is a pain we always feel with in us but never understand the reasones. It is a eternal unrest which we always hide from the ordinary world, its not sadness neither sorrow. It seethe us slowly, but never burst. When we realize it's too late.
In the back drop of Kolkata , Antoheen is a concert about ordinary peoples feelings. Their lives are like some actors.Cops are chasing crooks. Journalists chasing scoops. Rahul Bose plays a police officer who quotes Jim Morrison,"This is the end", as he make arrests. Radhika Apte, a TV reporter out to unearth a land grab scam, calls herself a 'investigative' journalist. They keeps themselves busy in their profession and thus they tries to forget emptiness of their lives. But it's when the harshness of daylight gives way to soft candle-light,they open up their true selves. They log on and chat. In the virtual world, they opens comes into real selves by hiding their identities remains hidden.
Director Anirudha Bose deals with an abstraction like loneliness with rare clarity. And he dose so with the help of a group of excellent executors. A sensitive script by Shyamal Sengupta and sharp editing by Arghya Kamal Mitra and skilful camera work by Abhik Mukhapadhyay. You can almost taste the mist clinging to window panes. Set to Shantanu Moitro's music, these images create some magical moments.
As for acting, Apte is credible, Bose is convincing. Veteran actors Aparna Sen and Sharmila Tagore fit comfortably into their roles as television executive and unmarried aunt respectively. But it's Mita Vashist, in her tiny role as the embittered wife of a business tycoon, who stands out. the films lyrically, like a beautiful song, with silences conveying more than words.

Unique Identification Number (UID)

A project in which every Indian citizen would have one unique identification number which will identify him or her. This will help the government to track down individuals and make life much easier for citizen as they will not have to submit so many documents each time they want to access any Govt or Private Service. This would end needless harassment that people face to avail basic government services like issuing passport, getting driving licence etc.
It would also serve as the basis for many e-governance services incorporating online verification of a person's identity. UID would enable the government to ensure that benefits under various welfare programmes reach the intended beneficiaries, prevent cornering of benefits by a few people and minimize frauds. It would enable financial institutions to exchange information regarding defaulters and encourage responsible borrower behavior.

The scheme envisages that at the inception, the UID number will be assigned to all voters by building on current electoral roll data and progressively adding other persons including persons below 18 years of age who are not a part of the voters list in the country. Over a period of time, through fail safe procedures backed by intensive use of technology and with the help of multiple government agencies, the currency and comprehensiveness of the database will be perfected.
The scheme is designed to leverage intensive usage of the UID for multiple purposes to provide an efficient and convenient mechanism to update information. Photographs and biometric data will be added progressively to make the identification foolproof. Easy registration and information change procedures are envisaged for the benefit of the people.
Adhaar:
The brand name of the Unique Identification number (UID) will be Aadhaar. The UIDAI's mandate is to issue every resident a unique identification number linked to the resident's demographic and biometric information, which they can use to identify themselves anywhere in India, and to access a host of benefits and services. The number (referred to until now as the 'UID') has been named Aadhaar, which translates into 'foundation', or 'support'. This word is present across most Indian languages and can therefore be used in branding and communication of the UIDAI program across the country.
Easily verifiable in an online, cost-effective wayAadhaar is a 12 digit individual identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India on behalf of the Government of India.
This number will serve as a proof of identity and address, anywhere in India.
Any individual, irrespective of age and gender, who is a resident in India and satisfies the verification process laid down by the UIDAI can enrol for Aadhaar.
Each individual needs to enroll only once which is free of cost.
Each Aadhaar number will be unique to an individual and will remain valid for life. Aadhaar number will help you provide access to services like banking, mobile phone connections and other Govt and Non-Govt services in due course.
Some other information about Aadhaar:
Aadhaar will be:
Unique and robust enough to eliminate the large number of duplicate and fake identities in government and private databases
A random number generated, devoid of any classification based on caste, creed, religion and geography.
Why Adhaar
Aadhaar-based identification will have two unique features:
Universality, which is ensured because Aadhaar will over time be recognised and accepted across the country and across all service providers.
Every resident's entitlement to the number.
The number will consequently form the basic, universal identity infrastructure over which Registrars and Agencies across the country can build their identity-based applications.
Unique Identification of India (UIDAI) will build partnerships with various Registrars across the country to enrol residents for the number. Such Registrars may include state governments, state Public Sector Units (PSUs), banks, telecom companies, etc. These Registrars may in turn partner with enrolling agencies to enrol residents into Aadhaar.
Aadhaar will ensure increased trust between public and private agencies and residents. Once residents enrol for Aadhaar, service providers will no longer face the problem of performing repeated Know Your Customer (KYC) checks before providing services. They would no longer have to deny services to residents without identification documents. Residents would also be spared the trouble of repeatedly proving identity through documents each time they wish to access services such as obtaining a bank account, passport, or driving license etc.
By providing a clear proof of identity, Aadhaar will empower poor and underprivileged residents in accessing services such as the formal banking system and give them the opportunity to easily avail various other services provided by the Government and the private sector. The centralised technology infrastructure of the UIDAI will enable 'anytime, anywhere, anyhow' authentication. Aadhaar will thus give migrants mobility of identity. Aadhaar authentication can be done both offline and online, online authentication through a cell phone or land line connection will allow residents to verify their identity remotely. Remotely, online Aadhaar-linked identity verification will give poor and rural residents the same flexibility that urban non-poor residents presently have in verifying their identity and accessing services such as banking and retail. Aadhaar will also demand proper verification prior to enrolment, while ensuring inclusion. Existing identity databases in India are fraught with problems of fraud and duplicate or ghost beneficiaries. To prevent these problems from seeping into the Aadhaar database, the UIDAI plans to enrol residents into its database with proper verification of their demographic and biometric information. This will ensure that the data collected is clean from the beginning of the program. However, much of the poor and under-privileged population lack identity documents and Aadhaar may be the first form of identification they will have access to. The UIDAI will ensure that its Know Your Resident (KYR) standards do not become a barrier for enrolling the poor and has accordingly developed an Introducer system for residents who lack documentation. Through this system, authorised individuals ('Introducers') who already have an Aadhaar, can introduce residents who don't have any identification documents, enabling them to receive their Aadhaar.

Margherita a place to visit....

A small town of eastern Assam, named after Italian Queen. It has a history, in 19th century then NEFA (North East Frontier) constructed a railway bridge to transport coal from the Margherita and near by coal fields. Chevaliar Robert Paganini ,the chief Engineer of the project was an Italian gentleman, he named that small new born town as Margherita after the reigining Italian Queen. Before that it was known as Ma-Kum which means abode of all tribes.
It is 42 K.m from Tinsukia town, you have to take N.H 38 from Makum to reach Margherita. Green tea garden will welcome you to the city of Black Diamond. On the way you will get Digboi, the place where Oil was found for the first time in India. You must see the refinary which is very near to the highway. Another important place to see is the war cemetery. You will realise the terror of war and how some one beloved lost their life. There you will find grave of many young people who were only son of their parent and died at a very young age.
On the way from Digboi to Margherita you have to cross a small hill which is a part of its beauty. There you will find the Burhi Dihing flowing through the middle of the town. It is famous for its sands colour and is a mai tributary of Brahmaputra. Do you want to taste ethnic cuisine then this is the best option for you. You can visit Singphoo Villa and Resorts and other restaurants which provides you a long menu of ethnic cuisines. If you have taken food then we can move forward to see the coal fields of North Eastern Coal Field where you will see the hazards of open cast mining and development due to industrialization. Here you will find Asia's first mechanized break factory and under ground coal mining. Your eyes may catch the Himalayan range also if the sky is clear. Yes!you are right this is the famous Patkai range, Ahom ancestor Sukafa came to establish Mung Dun Sun Khan (The Valley of Golden Paddy) through this this road only. Hei look at that elevation strange na! Its human made elevation. Now we will see some souvenir of second world war. It is the air strip used by the Western Allience and that is the Budhist tample, known as Mulang Budhist Tample. If you are interested in folk culture study than Margherita can be a Ideal palce here as it is a place of many tribes, Ahom, Miching, Nepali, Chingpho, Tai fake, Tai Khamti, Tangsa, Jemi, Moran, Mottuk, Sonowal, Kochari, Maan etc. Now we will go to Still well park from which point famous Still Well Road or Barma road is starting. This Lekha pani station is the last east point railway station. Now if you are interested in wildlife then Dihing patkai reserve forest is there.....
Yes I am Impressed with Margherita what about you................

Lyrics Of Vashnava Janako (Film Gandhi To Hitler) by Bhupen Hazarika

Jai Ram Ram...

Vaishnav jan to tene kahiye je
Peer paraayi jaane re
Dukh dooje ka harkar bhi
Abhiman na mann me aane re

Jai Ram Ram...

Jan-manas ki jo kare Badhai
Jan-manas ki jo kare Badhai
Na kare kabhi buraai re

Vachan, karam, mann paawan jinke
Dhanya hai unki maai re

Jai Ram Ram.....

Lobh tyag sab ko sam dekhe
Lobh tyag sab ko sam dekhe
Par-Naari ko maa maane re
Jeevha kate par jhooth na bole
Par-Dhan ko meetti jaane re
Vaishnav jan to tene kahiye je
Peer paraayi jaane re

Moh-Maya se pare rahe jo
Moh-Maya se pare rahe jo
Vairagya ho jinke mann me re

Ram naam ki mad me pagal
Har teerth basa ho tann me re

Vaishnav jan to tene kahiye je
Peer paraayi jaane re

Jai Ram Ram...

Lobh se door ho
Kapat rahit
Jinhe Kaam krodh na vyape re
Kavi Narsi darshan abhilashi
Jo kul ko moksh dilaye re

Vaishnav jan to tene kahiye je
Peer paraayi jaane re

Jai Ram Ram......

NILIM AKASH

NILIM AKASH

It was a rainy evening in Bhubaneshwar; I, Paran and Ashok was listening to music on my Dell -510. We have selected a file which contains Zubins' song. Paran was telling something about the marketing case study which will be discussed next day. Suddenly Ashok took a posture, and indicate us to be silent in a nonverbal way.......................It attracted our attention, we heard Ashok was murmmering somthing. few seconds latter we realised that he was trying to sing the song with Zubin, (nilim akash tirbir hapun hapun lagise.......................), but as he is an Oria it was a painfull excercise to immitate zubin.
It is one of my favourit songs. After Ashok Dibakarda and Jyoshree both are from kolkata heard this song and liked it. Even Jyoshree demanded a translation of the song from me. Then Amrit , Harekrushna, bimal, Rajan collected this song from me. I translated the theme of the song to them. I was trying to write somthing about the song since then but I stucked somewhere..........
Dream about a sky where millions of stars are gazing toward you with there teasing eyes...........And miles away from home, some one is looking at them and trying to convey through these stars. The calm and quite moon also eager to know about the lost one..........
nastalogy come into the mind, they brings a crowdy mob of memories. Though the life is going exploit in one way or other , these memories inspire . Yes ...............only nature can give you freedom from a monotonous lonlyness. The blue sky......the moonlight night, the insects with light the stars can share lonlyness.
When i listen this song, I feel the humanly side of a so called rebellion. How one can feel his/her lonelyness in most beautifull night. How some one like me remember their dearest one in all deadly nights and all moonlights.
I have lost myself in somewhere, but still i remember those sweet memories where i found myself originally.............................................................................
[thanks Paran, ashok, Harekrushna, Amrit, Bimal, Dibakarda and joyshree]

Airtel Har Friend Zaroori Hai

Chai ke liye jaise toast hota hai
Vaise har ek friend zaroori hota hai
Aise har ek friend zaroori hota hai
Koi subah paanch baje neend se jagaye
Koi raat ko teen baje jaan bachaye

Ek teri kadki mein sharing kare
Aur tere budget mein sneak in kare
Koi nature se guest koi host hota hai
Par har ek friend zaroori hota hai
Ek ghadi ghadi kaam aaye par kabhi kabhi call kare
Ek kabhi kabhi kaam aaye aur ghadi ghadi call kare

Gossip ka koi ghoomta phirta satellite
Koi sath rahe toh kar de sab alright
Koi effortless koi forced hota hai
Lekin har ek friend zaroori hota hai

Chatroom friend koi classroom friend
Koi bike pe race wala vroom vroom friend

It is one of very strong campaign by Airtel. Its jingles sounds well and very touchy. As telecom sector now giving more importance on Value Added Service(VAS), this add is very appropriate to build a brand image among the customers about Airtel's Network availability and other VAS.
Over all idea and concept is very nice and the presentation style is also very convincing, precise and well directed. Here it is prominent that Airtel is targeting more youth customers than elderly segment. The entire concept is on Friendship.
Comparing with the competitors is understood that Airtel is more focused with emotional attachment and youth customers. Where as Vodafone is more VAS oriented and on the other hand Reliance is more concern about pricing.
From this campaign it is clear that Airtel is more focused with youth segment, as they are more advance , fashionable and adventurous.
