A small town of eastern Assam, named after Italian Queen. It has a history, in 19th century then NEFA (North East Frontier) constructed a railway bridge to transport coal from the Margherita and near by coal fields. Chevaliar Robert Paganini ,the chief Engineer of the project was an Italian gentleman, he named that small new born town as Margherita after the reigining Italian Queen. Before that it was known as Ma-Kum which means abode of all tribes.
It is 42 K.m from Tinsukia town, you have to take N.H 38 from Makum to reach Margherita. Green tea garden will welcome you to the city of Black Diamond. On the way you will get Digboi, the place where Oil was found for the first time in India. You must see the refinary which is very near to the highway.
